Showcasing technology to the Government
Written by: Tony Henderson on 21 February, 2012The word technology is rarely far from the lips of many Government ministers these days, so Intellect was pleased to be able to showcase a handful of tech companies in the heart of business policy, the Department for Business Innovation and Skills.
For three weeks everyone visiting the offices of BIS in Victoria, London, had the opportunity to see some of the exciting and innovative work being carried out by some Intellect member companies, ranging from start-ups to major multinationals.
The showcase however was more than just a one-off “snap-shot” of some tech companies as we were also able to use it as part of the platform for the launch of our “Bootstrap Recovery” report. In this report we argue that making the UK more productive is central to winning the global race for competitiveness and growth and that harnessing the power of technology across all sectors of the economy is vital if we are to achieve this goal.
David Willetts MP, Minister for for Universities and Science visited the showcase and met some of the companies taking part. He also spoke to Intellect’s COO Charles Ward and discussed the “Bootstrap” report
All the companies who took part were very positive about the event and the opportunity to fly the flag for tech businesses.
One company in particular turned a real-life meeting with Vince Cable, Secretary of State for BIS, and the department’s permanent secretary Martin Donnelly, into an opportunity for some “virtual” success. 3D social media company Hao2, an Intellect BPC company, discussed how virtual worlds could be used to support events and advanced manufacturing. The company has also been invited to create a demo “virtual BIS foyer” complete with ”virtual Vince” avatar for BIS.
