DeltaXML is a small company dealing with some enormous clients.

The Malvern-based company of ten people creates software to aid change management – the updating of technical manuals and other structured documentation – and mostly sells to large clients in the US and Germany.

Delta XML’s clients come from the aerospace, finance, defence, publishing, legal, and government sectors, areas which seldom buy from such a small business – so the company has to be able to show that it is at least as professional as its competitors.

Gaining the Intellect Business Professional Certificate is a step towards that, says founder and CEO Robin La Fontaine. Delta XML is already involved in many areas of Intellect’s work and was keen to get involved in the Certification scheme when it was first proposed. La Fontaine has been pleased to see it taken seriously, and a worthwhile scheme created.

“This has helped us to get our own procedures in order. We’ve grown to ten people and at that stage you need to make sure your policies are written down and declared. Something like applying for the BPC makes you sit down and do it, instead of putting it off! Business continuity, for example, is an area that we’ve thought through but never formalised until now.”

The Intellect Business Professional Certificate team have been great, too, in challenging the company and forcing it to make the best policies it can. “External comment on what you’re doing is always worthwhile – the outside view can spot things you don’t see yourself, and you end up with a better set of policies.”

La Fontaine is keen to see the Intellect Business Professional Certificate gain international recognition, due to its own international business reach, and hopes to work with Intellect to help achieve this.

“We’re a product company, rather than a services one,” says La Fontaine, “and people buy our product simply because it’s the best. But recognition like this can only help establish our credentials with new customers, so it’s been worth doing. ”
