Partnership

GAMBICAIntellect and GAMBICA have partnered together for Automated Britain: The Renaissance of UK Manufacturing event.

The government has recognised the importance of automation as a key technology in enabling globally competitive manufacturing operations to invest and grow in the UK. Smart automated systems and processes are not only essential in attracting foreign direct investments (FDIs) but represent a key ingredient to grow and rebalance the British economy. A combination of world-class R&D (both corporate and academic) and early adoption of automated technologies by UK-based modern manufacturers can accelerate economic recovery and unleash growth to give Britain long-term prosperity.

Despite its undoubted value to industry, and some recent high profile success stories, more still needs to be done to encourage the UK manufacturing industry to invest fully in technology to improve the competitiveness of its factories and plants. This is already happening in other areas of the world, including some European countries, where the potentially transformational qualities of capital investment in automation are well recognised. Germany is probably the best example of how a vibrant manufacturing industry can be sustained in a high labour cost economy through investment in automation.

Overview

What's being talked about?

In addition to rebalancing and growing the economy, automation has a similarly important role to play in improving energy efficiency in industry and can make a significant contribution to the carbon reduction agenda. Most of the highest profile energy efficiency improvements of the last few years, for example lean burn car engines and domestic boilers, have been largely due to the incorporation of modern automation (sensing and control) technology. Scaled up into major manufacturing industries these techniques can cut energy consumption, reduce costs and improve efficiency.

Importantly, automation technology continues to be a UK strength and a manufacturing industry in its own right, contributing over £5bn to the UK economy and directly employing around 100,000 people. If we include the electronics supply-chain and ecosystem around the sector, these figures are considerably higher. Automation in fact represents a strategic growth market for the UK advanced electronics value-chain as it requires a high mix low volume production of sophisticated products which are not viable to be made in low cost countries.

UK manufacturing industry can and will help itself to embrace these challenges, and already, many automation companies provide educational and consultancy programmes for end-users, supplementing and complementing the work funded by BIS as an output of the Advanced Manufacturing Growth Review. Some of the larger automation companies have even introduced their own financing schemes to make it easier for industry to invest in automation technology. However, in these uncertain times, it is important for manufacturing industry to have the message reinforced that the government understands the challenges it faces and is supportive.

What's being talked about?

The purpose of the Automated Britain conference is to alert manufacturing industry, government and the media to the opportunities that automation offers and to spread best practice by having senior executives from the Automation and Manufacturing industries jointly present case studies on successful uses of automation to improve competitiveness.

The conference will also explore whether there are any perceived obstacles that discourage industry from making more of this type of investment.
