The recent changes to the CRC legislation creates both challenges and opportunities for ICT businesses

The registration of organisations from the private and public sector required to participate (Registered Participants) in the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC) was completed at the end of September, 2010.

Changes to the scope and terms of this mandatory Scheme were announced by the Government last October requiring almost 3,000 of the UK’s largest organisations to comply with its revised terms. These changes have significantly increased the cost burden on Participants via a mandatory requirement to purchase carbon allowances from April, 2012 and the elimination of any recycling of allowance payments.

The legislation has created some very unwelcome challenges to some key parts of the ICT sector. However, for other ICT businesses the CRC has brought new opportunities.

This course is designed to help Intellect members understand and then capitalise upon the new market for energy management innovations and services that are being catalysed by the legislation.

What is the market opportunity that CRC creates?

As a result of the increased costs of mandatory allowance purchase, Registered participants have a need to measure, manage and where possible reduce their use of energy from regulated sources. This is creating significant new market opportunities for ICT business that can support the Participants in terms of compliance and mitigation of the increased financial impact of the CRC Scheme.

Who can exploit this market opportunity?

Any ICT business that possesses technology and or services that will:

• help the affected organisations monitor, manage and optimise their energy consumption across their operations.
• assist the IT function to understand and optimise its use of energy across all of its assets from the desktop to the data centre and everywhere in between.

How much is this market worth?

Cost of compliance (data management) - £500m
Cost of non-compliance (financial risk) - £8,000m
Additional tax burden - £1,000m

How do you benefit from this course?
