| Optimistic growth predicted by software and IT services sector, despite credit crunch |
|
SMEs in the software and IT services sector are challenging gloomy economic projections.
With 53 per cent of respondents forecasting double digit-growth for 2008 compared to 49 per cent that predicted double-digit growth last year, the mood amongst SMEs remains bullish, despite the global financial squeeze.
The Intellect survey, now in its second year asks software and IT services companies operating in the UK about their current and future performance. The SME software sector, in particular is an important contributor to the UK economy, and the survey aims to understand better the key challenges and opportunities of companies developing and selling software in the UK.

| Intellect heralds the launch of FREESAT and Free HD |
|
Intellect has welcomed the launch of Freesat from BBC and ITV and in particular the provision of free HD content for the first time in the UK.
Freesat will be an important part of the digital TV landscape in the UK and will offer consumers even greater choice of service. The additional benefit of free HD content will be an extremely attractive USP as demand for HD continues to grow.
Intellect member companies in the consumer electronics and satellite sectors have already played a key role in developing the service and will continue to do so.

| Professionalism defined |
|
To understand fully the importance of professionalism in IT necessitates a clear understanding of the attributes and obligations that are required of IT professionals, as well as the environment in which they operate. Intellect's Professionalism Workstream and the British Computer Society have been working to provide a definition of Professionalism in the context of the IT industry.
The workstream's latest piece of work, 'Characteristics of the IT profession and IT professionals' (pdf 84KB), provides individuals and organisations with an easily accessible guide to understanding professionalism in the rapidly-developing modern industry. It describes the criteria for the profession, the bodies which govern it and the professionals who belong to it, and defines the essence of professionalism upon which all building blocks of the profession are constructed.

Intellect and Bitkom establish virtual link |
|
To support Intellect's 'HDTV-across-Europe Congress' joint initiative with Bitkom, its sister trade association in Germany, an electronic virtual link has been established between Intellect and a Bitkom server in Berlin. This enables documents to be worked upon jointly without fear of encountering different versions at the same time, and avoiding the danger of them 'falling out of synchronism'. This is just a small aspect of a wider collaboration by which it is hoped to produce many tangible benefits and spin-offs from this major international English language HDTV Congress. The event will take place at a Deutsche Telekom Conference Centre in Berlin between 14-15 October 2008. The focus will be on providing an up-to-date 'snapshot' of the HDTV roll-out situation across europe, the challenges and opportunities. The HDTV theme will extend into the Smart Home and Smart Office of the future.
