Intellect comments on equalities bill
Intellect believes that much of the proposed Equalities Bill unveiled by Harriet Harman, leader of the Commons, is very positive and will bring long term benefits to technology businesses. The technology sector, which contributes around 10 per cent of UK GDP, is one of the hardest hit UK industries by both the skills shortage and a low number of female employees.
Intellect is particularly interested in the section entitled 'requiring transparency' in the proposed Bill. It supports the overall principle of transparency, but believes that ideas like the kite-mark scheme need additional detail and work to ensure that they have a real impact on businesses and don't just become another meaningless stamp. |

Tom Wills-Sandford appointed to 'Expert Sub-group of the Glover Committee on the Role of SMEs in Public Procurement' |
Chancellor Alistair Darling announced in the Budget 2008, the establishment of a committee chaired by Anne Glover (Chief Executive of Amadeus Capital Partners Limited), to provide advice on necessary government action to reduce the barriers to SMEs competing for public sector contracts, within the scope of EU law and the policy objective of value for money. It will also advise on the practicality of setting a goal for SMEs to win 30 per cent of all public sector business in the next five years. Anne Glover has appointed an expert sub-group to support her committee and has asked Tom Wills-Sandford, Intellect's Deputy Director-General, to be a member of the group.
The full committee has issued an online call for evidence which closes on 08 August. Intellect expects to make its own submission and will be holding a workshop towards the end of July. If you wish to participate in this workshop please contact Matt Mulley, T 020 7331 2021, E matt.mulley@intellectuk.org
Meanwhile Tom would welcome any input on the terms of reference of the expert sub-group. Please contact Tom, T 07770 270974, E tom.wills-sandford@intellectuk.org |

Intellect endorses approach of migration to digital |
Intellect welcomes The Secretary of State Andy Burnham's statement on the future of digital radio and endorses the approach of a migration to digital as detailed in the Digital Radio Working Group's interim report.
Intellect supports the collaborative approach that the Department of Culture, Media and Sport has taken in creating the interim report, which has seen all sections of the industry work together to identify a migration path to digital radio. As the report makes clear, DAB will be the primary digital delivery mechanism in the UK going forward. |

Technology industry publishes guidelines for UK companies |
| |
Regulators are becoming ever-more aggressive in penalising companies which do not comply with data security and data protection requirements, imposing fines on them and publicising data breaches.
Intellect has published a checklist for avoiding the common data security and protection issues encountered in outsourcing projects. The guidelines provide a clear overview of the types of issues outsourcing projects might encounter, when the best time to address them is and which party is legally obliged or best placed to deal with them. |
