Do we have to get signed copies of contracts of employment returned for them to be valid? |

This month we answer a question sent in by Dan from Wakefield.
Legally you are under an obligation to issue the statement, not to get the employee to sign it, and if the employee starts work under the terms and conditions as set out in the statement it will be broadly assumed that he or she has accepted these and any tribunal would look at custom and practice to see what happens in practice. Increased knowledge of worker's rights |
|
The Government is planning a two-pronged attack on rogue employers who flout the law - firstly by introducing a single telephone helpline for vulnerable workers to report abuses to the Government's workplace enforcement agencies (with those agencies then sharing vital information to catch these employers), and secondly via a £6 million information campaign to raise everyone's awareness of employment rights and how to enforce them. Draft Apprenticeships Bill |
|
The Government has published a draft Apprenticeships Bill which includes proposals to make schools provide information about apprenticeships, and to ensure that there are sufficient places to meet demand. It also proposes a national service to link potential apprentices with potential employers. |

Flexible working - extension of the right to request |
|
Consultation has now started on the extension of the right to request flexible working to parents of children aged under 16. Consultation ends on 18 November 2008, and the new regulations are planned for April 2009. |
