Intellect feeds into joint recommendation to EU for European software strategy
Intellect, in partnership with other major trade associations from across Europe, has submitted nine recommendations towards a European software strategy to EU Information Commissioner, Viviane Reding. The strategy calls for; action to tackle the sector's growing skills problem, the creation of a framework in which the European software industry can maximise its creativity and measures to make finance more readily available.

Intellect director general receives editor's award

It is rare these days for anyone to remain in a senior executive position for 10 years, and especially in an industry such as the technology sector. But the winner of this year's Outstanding Contribution to UK IT award has this year celebrated a decade in his current post as director general of Intellect, the UK's technology trade association. Our congratulations go to John Higgins CBE. In that time, the IT profession has grown to be the second largest private sector contributor to the UK economy, behind only financial services. Thanks to the efforts of our winner, UK IT's influence in government has grown and his contacts around the world place our industry at the heart of the global technological revolution.

The intensification of the banking crisis in September and October has had a severe impact on the flow and availability of credit and this has significantly dampened prospects for economic growth.

London Business Forum on Trade & Investment with Palestine

Conference taking place on 15-16 December 2008

We advertised in a previous edition of The Bulletin for a consultant to participate in a project to contribute towards peace in the Middle East, by helping to identify areas where the Palestinian and Israeli ICT sectors can co-operate. The initial exercise is to create a market map. Intellect was asked for help by Mercy Corps, an NGO (Non Governmental Organisation). They were awarded a grant by the UK Government Middle East and North Africa Conflict Prevention Pool. After receiving a number of excellent proposals, we selected Nick White, formerly of Gartner and IDC to undertake the project.  Nick has already spent a successful week in Jerusalem and Ramallah.

As a result of Nick's work, Intellect has been asked to add an ICT thread to the above conference.  A business roundtable will be held on 16 December to increase co-operation with UK.  Would anyone interested in participating or being part of the roundtable, please contact Tom Wills-Sandford, M 07770 270974, E tom.wills-sandford@intellectuk.org

Intellect responds to Sir Gus O'Donnell

Letter to Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Home Civil Service
Following Sir Gus O'Donnell's challenge to industry, we were asked for our views on what the ICT and electronics (high tech) sector could do to help mitigate the effects on the UK of the financial crisis and economic downturn. Proposed actions fall into three areas, and take as a starting point the fact that the sector is critical to the long term vision of the UK as a high added value, innovative and highly skilled global location. TickIT to undergo radical update

TickiTplus logo

The ISO 9001 accredited certification scheme, TickIT, is about to undergo a radical update that will introduce a new approach to IT certification in the UK and internationally.
There are many improvements in the new scheme, including:

. graded capability monitoring based on ISO/IEC 15504
. the option of adding additional IT standards into ISO 9001 accredited certification, such as ISO/IEC 20000 for Service Management and ISO/IEC 27001 for Information Security
. a revised approach to training and qualifications for both auditors and practitioners
. a more formal approach to improvements
. support for IT process development based around IT standards, principally ISO/IEC 12207
. the option of self and independent assessment supported by revised documentation, some of it free or low cost and a new regulation approach

To publically launch TickITplus, Intellect are holding a seminar on 08 December at their London address where details of the scheme and its implications for both new and current TickIT certified organisations will be described - see the details below. This will be of great interest to managers and quality personnel who are involved with any aspect of IT process improvement, whether ISO 9001 certification is the aim or not. The seminar will be a morning session with a buffet lunch provided. Speakers will include Peter Lawrence of CSC and Derek Irving, TickITplus Project Development Manager.

TickITplus is currently at an advanced stage of development with trials now in preparation and a scheduled launch date of June 2009. It is directly supported by Intellect and the BCS with BSI administration and DIUS funding. Major IT users, industry bodies and suppliers, including Logica, are directly involved in its development.
