'Protecting rights, Protecting society: Balancing privacy and security in the UK'

In a keynote speech at Intellect about protecting people while protecting their rights, the Home Secretary announced a consultation on the use of RIPA (Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act) that will examine:

  • a revision of the Codes of Practice that come under RIPA
  • which public authorities can use RIPA powers
  • how those powers are authorised, and who authorises their use

The Home Secretary also announced that there will be a consultation on proposed changes to RIPA powers to bring them in line with tests of safeguards, openness, proportionality and common sense.

Intellect is delighted to have hosted the speech.  The technology industry plays an important role in the protection of UK citizens, from intelligent surveillance systems at airports to sophisticated DNA sampling to joined up national security services.

Intellect supports procurement tools

New OGC procurement tools could bring significant savings

New procurement tools recently launched by the Office of Government Commerce (OGC), developed in close collaboration with Intellect's Public Sector Council and suppliers, have the potential to bring significant savings and will help reduce the average length of public sector procurement processes.

The Pre-Qualification Tool will help senior management decide if a project is fit for purpose and provide more efficient procurement and delivery. The Joint Statement of Intent ensures a common understanding and set of objectives, giving both parties more clarity. The tools will
help to reduce the average length of a procurement cycle, which in turn will provide a clear cost saving benefit.

Superfast broadband and the role of wireless

One day workshop exploring satellite, WiMax and LTE-based options

The Caio Review and the Broadband Stakeholder Group have both recognised that there will be a role for innovative wireless and satellite services to supplement those to be provided by fibre. However, there is a lack of awareness as to what the technical options are concerning wireless/satellite implementations.

This one day workshop will look at the satellite, WiMax and LTE-based options, their main technical and commercial parameters and the positive and negative points affecting adoption in the UK. Speakers will cover the services that it will be possible to provide in the short term (three to five years) and in the longer term (five to ten years).
