Technology tackling climate change |
The timing of High Tech: Low Carbon Week (HTLCW) could not be more important. The UK Government has just increased carbon emissions reduction targets from 60 to 80 per cent by 2050. We have a newly created Department for Energy and Climate Change looking at how we will meet these ambitious targets. Technology has a central role to play, not just in improving the energy efficiency of our devices and networks but also in developing low carbon technologies that decrease the carbon emissions of other sectors.
HTLCW will look at how the technology sector is meeting these challenges. Partners and stakeholders from government, technology companies, other trade bodies and NGOs will all be contributing and hosting sessions during the week. If you have an interest in how technology is tackling climate change you need to be there.

Our response to Digital Britain report |

Intellect welcomes Lord Carter's Digital Britain interim report |
| | |
| |
Industry is pleased to see the government taking action on areas which will be vital to the UK's growth out of the recession.
Sam Ingleby, digital communications programme manager, Intellect said: "Stephen Carter's Digital Britain report has become more important in the context of a recession and I think that some of the announcements made are exciting in their ambition and scope. The bold aim for universal broadband coverage by 2012, and the commitment to a digital future for radio are exactly the kind of shots in the arm that the UK economy needs to fight off its current malaise."

Intellect responds to PAC report on NPfIT
| |
| |
The Public Accounts Committee's second report on the National Programme for IT (NPfIT) report underscores the need for government to explore the feasibility and implications of the policies it puts forward, particularly those that involve substantial IT-enabled business change. There is no escaping the fact that technology has a vital role to play in the provision of 21st century health and social care services and will continue to moving forward. If we want more modern integrated services we need investment, but we also need to ensure that both practitioners and patients can see the benefits of solutions and are comfortable using them.

Intellect calls for government commitment to education capital investment programmes |
| | |
| |
After recent reports in the media speculating on the availability of funding for a number of education capital investment programmes, Intellect has written a letter to Jim Knight MP and John Denham MP, copying in Lord Mandelson.
The letter calls on the government to make an unequivocal statement of support for these programmes, and extends an invitation to discuss the role that the technology industry can play towards ensuring that government's investment generates maximum benefits to students, teachers, and the UK as a whole.

New regulations expected in spring 2009
| |
| |
The government has proposed new regulations, expected to be introduced in the spring, relating to the collection, treatment and recycling of batteries in the UK.
Under the proposals, anyone placing portable batteries/accumulators - or products containing portable batteries/accumulators - onto the UK market for the first time (meaning that they haven't bought them from another UK supplier), will be classified as a battery producer. This include importers, as well as wholesalers who import portable batteries/accumulators to place on the UK market.
This summer, the Environment Agency will publish a list of provisionally approved compliance schemes on their website. |

Is a new event to showcase UK technology viable? |
| |
Intellect has recently initiated a research project, partly funded by Department for Business Enterprise & Regulatory Reform (BERR)
We will be forming recommendations for government and industry on the feasibility of a prestigious international conference and/or exhibition that would provide a focal point for the UK technology sector, in particular designers and manufacturers of hardware, as well as a means of showcasing innovative and leading edge technologies. Any judgement on these points will of course be based on the specific views of the UK electronics industry as a whole. If your company has some element of its operations in the UK, and you either design and/or manufacture electronics for any end application, we need to hear from you.
If you would like your company to be part of this project, please contact Henry Parker, Technology Markets Programme Manager, E henry.parker@intellectuk.org

Making the most of multicore challenges and solutions webinar |

Thursday 26 February 2009, 15:00 - 16:00 (UK time)
Traditionally chip manufacturers have focused on making their processors faster by using smaller and smaller transistors, but recent generations of hardware have concentrated on having more processing cores per chip. Typically this has meant dual or quad-core chips, but in the near future this will be expanded to 64-core and beyond. The challenges for exploiting this multi-core architecture are many and varied.
This webinar will look at the state of the art in multicore architecture, and provide an overview of some of the software tools and techniques available for exploiting the power of these processors. It is of interest to both software engineers and managers.
