Intellect reviews current R&D innovation support in the UK

'Helping Innovation Flourish'

Intellect recently published a paper reviewing the current provision for supporting R&D and innovation in the UK. Coming out of the recession Intellect believes that the technology industry will be at the core of new growth in the UK, offering a better balanced economy. 'Helping innovation flourish' makes several recommendations, formed from the basis of the discussions, which aim to encourage innovation and R&D in the UK.

Lord Carter's Interim Digital
Britain report

Let's look at the big story to emerge from Lord Carter's Interim Digital Britain report, that of a 'universal' broadband at 2Mbit/s, a speed easily fast enough to stream iPlayer jitter free. The questions of whether it's plausible to deliver this as a base line service across the UK has prompted much head scratching by the experts and this week Broadband thinktank PointTopic said the government faces a "massive challenge" in achieving its goal. They produced a regional breakdown of areas that currently do not have fast access showing that Northern Ireland is most poorly placed, with more than 30 per cent of households out of reach of 2Mbit/s followed by Wales, where 26.9 per cent of homes are unable to get speeds of 2Mbit/s or above. It says a majority of regions in the UK have 10-15 per cent of their population beyond 2Mbit/s reach. Two big questions for Lord Carter and his team: how to reach this underserved demographic, and what level of public intervention is government willing to undertake?

'Open source, open standards, and re-use'

On 18 March, Andrew Stott (Deputy Government CIO and chair of the CTO Council, Cabinet Office) discussed the Government Action Plan on Open Source, Open Standards and Re-Use and potential next steps with a broad range of Intellect members.  Intellect looks forward to working with the government to take the action plan forward, developing guidance and addressing the issues around licensing policies, pan-government licensing agreements and ownership of IPR.

SaaS Group - new group

Intellect launches Software as a
Service Group

Software as as Service is a growing model across the Software industry but is still a misunderstood business model.  In order to dispel some of these myths and to improve the understanding about the benefits of SaaS Intellect's new group will be producing a paper which will examine these issues as well as the opportunities for the UK industry over the coming years.

For further information about the group contact Venease Morgan, T 020 7331 2165,

Superfast Broadband event review

Today's technology can provide the Universal Service Commitments called for by Lord Stephen Carter in the Digital Britain Report

Evidence presented at Intellect's workshop on 09 February demonstrated that the UK's digital divide is fully capable of being bridged using technology available today.
Representatives of the terrestrial wireless and satellite communications industry came together in a workshop to discuss the capabilities of their current and planned broadband services, and also where their technologies would lead to in the next five to ten years.

Carbon Reduction Commitment

DECC's Consultation on the Draft Order to Implement the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC)
This is the third consultation on the development of the CRC scheme, which is scheduled to come into effect in April 2010. CRC is a cap and trade scheme which seeks to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from large non-energy intensive organisations in both the public and the private sector. You can view the document here (PDF 1.9MB). Intellect's Data Centres Group is looking to submit a response ahead of the 04 June deadline.

If you would like to find out more about the consultation, or if you would like to be involved in discussing or drafting Intellect's response, please contact Scarlett Graham, T 020 7331 2173, E scarlett.graham@intellectuk.org

We also tell the sad, sad story of how a very experienced consultative seller paid the price for departing from the Proud Oscar model, and so blew away a fantastic opportunity.
