| |
John Higgins CBE, director general of Intellect, the trade association for the UK technology industry said:
"I welcome the ambition to make this the Technology Budget. The Chancellor is right to try and paint a picture of how technology can provide the high value jobs and economic growth of the future. However, some parts of his picture are barer than others..." |

Intellect supports the government's aim to ensure that its ICT costs are managed effectively and provide value. MAC PBS Tier 2 review - restricting Tier 2 to shortage occupations only |
| |
The MAC has been asked by the Government to offer advice on the following questions, in addition to its continuing work on the shortage occupation list:
- Is there an economic case for restricting Tier 2 to shortage occupations only? - What is the Committee's assessment of the economic contribution made by the dependants of the points-based system migrants and their role in the labour market?
The Committee has been asked to publish reports addressing the two questions by the end of July 2009.
The Committee will be publishing its planned method, including terms of reference and questions on Thursday 30 April, which will include a call for evidence. As the timescale is so tight Intellect has arranged a short notice meeting with the MAC to discuss the two reviews, focusing mainly on the Tier 2 review as the MAC will be looking at the need for Inter-Company Transfers (ICTs).
Intellect is very concerned with this review and the possibility to remove the ICT capability to industries unless the roles are listed on the shortage list. At the last review of the shortage list, technology roles were not listed. Intellect believes that potential restrictions would have huge implications on the attractiveness of the UK and will therefore be pulling together a response to the consultation following this meeting.
We are keen to hear from all members who believe this potential change will impact their business, especially if they cannot attend the meeting. We will continue to update members through our website with terms of reference for the review and dates for the consultation.

25 hardy individuals from across the food industry, from farmers to butchers, have signed up to cycle from Smithfield Market in London to Rungis Market in Paris on 05 June. The ride will take three days and the aim is to raise large sums of money to support breast cancer research, farm africa and two butchers charities. Richard Macdonald, the director general of the NFU and one of several CEO's who are putting their bodies on the line said, "none of us are super fit or regular cyclists, but these are such great causes that we are all determined to finish and raise a large contribution for these needy causes. So, anyone putting anything in to the kitty is hugely appreciated."
