Intellect's Concept Viability Service The Office of Government Commerce, the Government CIO Council and the National Audit Office all recommend early engagement with industry

Intellect, the UK trade association for the IT, telecoms and electronics industries, will later today publish a position paper looking at joined-up social and health care services. Noting that most of England lags behind its neighbours in terms of integrated health and welfare services, Intellect calls on the government to act to remove the barriers to wider adoption of best practice. It believes that this would be a tangible way to help the country catch up in delivering the best possible service to the public. The government has set out a radical plan for joining up health and social care IT systems and sharing information about individuals and communities across services. The Intellect paper states that for these IT systems to be truly effective and work as envisaged, the government needs to ensure long term growth by deploying the following: - a smarter procurement process - a more holistic approach to care provision - stronger leadership - greater sharing of best practice among health and social care practitioners Intellect also believes that closer, more consultative working with industry, which draws upon its experience with the private sector would improve the benefits delivered to practitioners and citizens alike. Tom Nawojczyk, chair of the Intellect health and social care group comments: “Joined up health and social care could provide a more inclusive and holistic service to our population. However we cannot ignore the challenges we face in bringing this about. The current gaps in critical knowledge of risks and vulnerability that exist because of data silos, must be addressed. We need a joined up view of critical patient information to be able to support joined up service provision. We hope to work more closely with government in this area to ensure a positive outcome for all.” The paper is available at: http://www.intellectuk.org/download.asp?file=1022
