Intellect seeks debate on the future of the technology industry
Industry publishes discussion paper: Foundations First: Building the Future of the Technology Industry

Intellect, the UK trade association for the IT, telecoms and electronics industries, today launched a discussion paper to mark the beginning of a campaign debating the future of the technology industry. The paper, Foundations First: Building the Future of the Technology Industry, looks at how the industry can survive when faced with a raft of challenges including globalised markets and supply chains, increasingly complex high-profile projects, and domestic skills shortages.

Drawing on the industry's own experience and learning from other sectors, Intellect has identified four "cornerstones" which it believes must be strengthened at a strategic level to ensure the sector can fulfil its vital role in the UK economy.

These include:
- relationships with other industries
- professionalism
- developing talent
- stimulating innovation

These cornerstones must be developed – by both government and the industry itself – in order for the industry to reinforce its work and continue its growth.

Tom Abram, chair of Intellect's future of ICT industry group commented: "This industry delivers the competitive advantage which is vital to the UK's success in areas from Defence to Media to Financial Services. However it is still a maturing sector, and must continue to develop as a profession whilst adapting to an evolving and challenging marketplace. Support from Government and other stakeholders is both vital and welcome, but the industry must also come together as a sector to address these issues. The same industry which has made the development of a globalised economy possible cannot now neglect its own needs."

Intellect will be organising a series of events over the course of the year to explore how to best support the evolution of the technology industry.
