Intellect Identity Management Conference 2006
06 July 2006

The Challenges of Identity Management in the Public Sector

Whatever you do, don't mention ID cards!  Identity management is far more than simply that headline issue. That was a common and consistent theme running through the well attended Intellect conference held on 06 July at the Royal Garden Hotel in London.  Rather consider the whole spectrum of issues surrounding identity management, from validity of the data actually input to making those systems evolve and 'clean themselves' to the importance of co-operation and collaboration to deliver benefits to both citizens and government in their transactions with each other.

Chaired by Intellect director general, John Higgins, speakers included Ian Watmore, head of the Prime Minister's Delivery Unit; Vincent Geake, CIO, Home Office; Michael Keegan, Business Unit Director National Identity Scheme of Fujitsu Services and David Wilkinson, VP Engineering Initiate Systems speaking for Northgate Information Solutions.

These contributors were joined in a panel-based Q&A session by Henry Bloomfield of the Identity and Passport Service and Peter Bostrom, CTO Public Sector North America, TIBCO Software.

The afternoon session concentrated more on the implications and ramifications of identity technology as well as real life issues arising from the implementation of those technologies, including contributions from Jonathon Bamford, Office of the Information Commissioner; Liz Sands from HMRC; Nigel Shaw from Atos Origin and Ian Tait of Siemens.

Although titled 'Identity Management in the Public Sector', another coherent conclusion of the event was that lessons applied to the public sector were equally relevant for private and commercial operations.
