Addressing Environmental Issues and Challenges
10 February 2005

Supported by Envirowise

Over 80 delegates attended this conference which looked at environmental issues and challenges for the electronics industry.

Chaired by Dr Martin Goosey, Rohm and Haas Electronic Materials Europe Ltd, the day featured presentations from industry specialists, member companies and government bodies.

The first paper was from Joy Boyce, Fujitsu Services Ltd and chair of Intellect’s HSECC Committee. Joy looked at key issues facing the electronics sector as well as covering the growth of environmental legislation, including WEEE, RoHS, EuP, REACH and the Landfill Directive.

The next paper, from Peter Evans, Sony UK Ltd, covered the content of the WEEE Directive together with the scope and exemptions. Also discussed were proposed take-back systems and routes to compliance to go it alone.

Tom Perrett from Tin Technology covered product types not within RoHS, the legal difference between WEEE and RoHS, possible exemptions for Pb and where banned substances might be found.

The next speaker, Catherine Browne, from the Chemicals and GM Policy Division at defra, discussed the REACH legislation. Topics included the UK Government’s view; costs and benefits; what is happening at present and what will happen in the future.

Mark Shayler, eco3, explored the topics of eco-design and the implications of the Energy Using Product Directive (EuP.D). A number of environmentally aware designs were presented and these included cardboard coffins and eco-lights in car parks. Mark then went into greater detail on the EuP Directive, discussing the objectives and scope of the Directive.

Closing the conference, Martin Goosey thanked all the speakers for their excellent and informative presentations.
