Electromagnetic Compatibility Committee

Brian Jones

Meeting dates to follow shortly

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is the ability of equipment to function satisfactorily in its electro-magnetic environment without introducing intolerable electro-magnetic disturbances to other local equipment. The EMC Committee influences regulations such as new European EMC directives and guidelines and ensures changes to international standards are justified and proportionate.

The committee recognises that member resources are now very limited and the UK position towards international standards is increasingly dominated by laboratories and consultants.

Intellect's strategy is to prioritise around the biggest issues and accept the cost impact of tougher standards elsewhere on product design and testing.

Over the next three years the Electromagnetic Compatibility Committee will:

  • influence the guidelines to the new EMC Directive
  • set the framework for new EMC regulations in the UK
  • lobby DTI on new UK regulations to minimise the impact of adverse changes compared to the old directive and maximise the benefits
  • represent Intellect's views on the draft standards in BSI
  • ensure equitable emission limits between radio and non-radio (e.g. above 1GHz)
  • prevent unnecessarily strict immunity requirements
  • promote the technology-neutral requirements between power line communications and wireless telecoms
