Intellect welcomes NAO recommendations for best practice in delivering public sector IT but calls for greater consistency

Intellect, the trade association for the UK IT, telecommunications and electronics industries, welcomes today’s National Audit Office report: “Delivering successful IT-enabled business change,” but believes challenges remain in ensuring best practice is adopted by the public sector.

Recognising the many and varied successful IT projects across the public sector, the report states that a key success factor for these projects was the creation of constructive relationships between clients and suppliers from the outset.

Commenting, John Higgins, director general at Intellect said:

“The success of the ‘intelligent client’ approach depends largely on early engagement with suppliers and an open dialogue. Best practice in this area exists through the Intellect IT Concept Viability Service and the Intellect Supplier Code of Best Practice – tools which most UK IT suppliers and some public sector IT departments use.

As the report points out, challenges do remain for Government in implementing public sector IT projects - the biggest of which is the embedding of best practice across the public sector. If achieved this would ensure greater consistency and therefore higher project success rates.”
