The Information Technologists’ Company and Intellect, the trade association for the UK IT, telecommunications and electronics industries, has raised nearly £50,000 from this year’s IT Charity Ball which will be donated to YouthNet, the UK’s first online charity. YouthNet is to use the money to improve and expand its 24-hour askTheSite service, which currently receives more than 500 questions a month from young people on all aspects of life from housing to abuse. “YouthNet’s innovative use of technology is the foundation of its vital service to thousands of young people who need reliable, expert help and advice,” says John Leighfield, Master of the Information Technologists’ Company. “Its work is an excellent example of using technology to improve lives and I hope the money we raised will ensure more young people benefit.” askTheSite allows users to post questions and receive answers confidentially from expert partners including Shelter, Samaritans, SANELine, Brooke, CAB, Addaction and YouthNet’s own professional relationship advisors. More than 50,000 young people search askTheSite’s archive of anonymous, previously asked questions every month. TheSite.org now plans to add audio content and mobile access to reach more young people. The Information Technologists’ Company and Intellect raised £41,800 at the 2006 IT Charity Ball and subsequently made a further £7,000 through the sale of an auction item following the event. “YouthNet gives young people unparalleled access to the experts, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and relies on generous charitable donations to maintain its service,” says YouthNet’s corporate development manager Sam Thomas. “The money raised by the Information Technologists’ Company and Intellect will ensure that YouthNet has the technical and advisory capacity to answer all the questions that the service receives over the coming year and beyond.”
