At a glance: This committee meets jointly with the UKspace Satellite Telecommunications Committee and covers issues relating to satellite telecommunications and broadcasting including research & development funding, legislation, spectrum and developing the market.

Focus:
Members of the Satellite Committee are drawn from large multi-nationals to SMEs and cover upstream and downstream players. They work to respond to initiatives and consultations from UK and European Government on regulatory, technical and policy aspects of satellite communications and broadcasting. Satellite navigation is covered by Intellect’s Position and Timing Committee.

The Satellite Committee works in close partnership with the Ukspace Satellite Telecommunications Sub-Committee and Intellect Member companies are eligible to apply for membership of UKspace (formerly known as United Kingdom Industrial Space Committee).

Key focus areas
  • ensuring continued UK participation in the European Space Agency’s ARTES programmes at a level, and on terms, commensurate with industry’s objectives
  • promoting an active role for satellite in UK and Europe’s Digital Divide and related programmes
  • helping define the role of satellite post analogue TV switch-off
  • ensuring a continued balanced UK position on satellite spectrum at national level and for WRC meetings
  • promoting the involvement in UK satellite programmes of innovative downstream companies and services
