Energy and Environment Working Group

Technology and energy efficiency

The Energy and Environment working group was set up to explore how the technology sector can help bring about a low carbon economy, highlight the good work already being done across our industry and identify areas for improvement.

Intellect published a report in February 2008, on technology and energy efficiency (High Tech: Low Carbon (PDF 3.5MB)) that addresses some of the current problems and explores the beneficial effects of our technologies in helping other sectors increase their efficiency and reduce their environmental impacts. It demonstrates how the technology sector is part of the solution to climate change, rather than the problem.

The report was supported by around 50 case studies. These detail how the technology sector is constantly innovating to produce more efficient products and to develop devices and systems that improve efficiency – not just for our sector but across the whole economy.

Intellect would like to continue developing our online library of case studies. If you can provide an example of how the application of technology is delivering measurable improvements in energy efficiency, we would be delighted to receive submissions. The relevant topics include the following:

  • products demonstrating best practice in energy efficiency, eco design or life-cycle assessment
  • energy efficient business processes, including green manufacturing and supply chain management
  • technologies that we supply that help other sectors become more efficient - e.g logistics, telematics, user management tools, sensors
  • technologies we supply that create alternative business models - things that help people do what they do differently, e.g teleworking, multifunctional devices
  • information on any future facing technologies - things that we supply or will supply in future that enable people to do different things, rather than do the same things differently

If you have any case studies that you would like to send in, a template is available that will help you structure the material. Do not feel obliged to use this template, you can send the information in any form.
