Intellect launches guide to best practice in software testing supported by over 25 organisations

Software purchasers advised to check if suppliers are following the code

Intellect, the trade association for the UK technology industry, today launched its Software Testing Code of Best Practice, which aims to ensure more software testing programmes are delivered successfully. The code is supported by more than 25 organisations involved in software standards and testing, including the British Standards Institute.

The software industry contributes around £36 billion annually to UK GDP. Poor testing results in a negative image of software, which in turn reduces investment in software and therefore the industry’s input to the economy.

The new code describes practical improvements that can yield real benefit. It lays out 10 commitments to best practice in ten specific areas when considering or undertaking testing.

Intellect advocates their adoption by all software suppliers and encourages those purchasing software to check that their supplier adheres to them and to get involved in the testing process as much as possible. Software vendors that have already signed up to the code include Microsoft, IBM, Logica and EDS. (A complete list is available at www.intellectuk.org/code)

John Higgins, director general of Intellect comments, “Software is everywhere today. In our computers, yes, but in our cars and TVs too. And it's more complex than ever. Testing that it works, so problems can be dealt with, is an important part of the process. This code, based on the know how of the best in the business, sets new standards for the sector and will help ensure software works well for us all.”

The increasing complexity of software projects and growing number of multi-supplier collaborations is impacting upon testing specifications and requirements. The Software Testing Code of Best Practice advises both the supplier and the customer how to balance these elements and take ownership of the testing process in various phases. It also goes beyond software and meets business expectations.
