At a glance: The Utilities Group represents the interests of ICT, electronics and telecommunications companies to the various utility sectors, such as water, gas and electricity by engaging with the regulators, the regulated and other stakeholders within these markets.

Focus: The group is currently holding a series of roundtables with the utilities regulators to discuss some of the challenges facing the utilities industry and the IT solutions that could help tackle them, and meet new regulatory requirements. These roundtables provide a greater understanding of the direction of regulation within the utilities market and enable members to discuss IT solutions directly with the regulators and government officials.

The group aims to improve the relationship between suppliers, regulators, the regulated and other stakeholders within the utilities market, by:

  • promoting the supplier community to key stakeholders within the industry
  • improving the knowledge and understanding of the role of, and future possibilities for, technology throughout the utilities industries
  • engaging fully with Intellect members active in this area
  • assisting the development of the industry and its marketplace through a variety of appropriate means
  • working with Intellect to produce appropriate guidance and information both for the supplier industry and for the utilities industry, including regulators
  • lobbying appropriate stakeholders on issues affecting the development of the role of technology in the utilities industries
  • working, where appropriate, with other Intellect working groups

A Smart Grids and Smart Metering Group has been established to deal specifically with issues relating to the roll-out of smart-grids and smart-meters across the UK.
