SatNav and Mapping Workshop

View presentations more»

This workshop was jointly arranged by Intellect, the Location & Timing KTN, the Royal Institute of Navigation and ITS UK.

A SatNav is becoming the "must have" accessory of today's motorist. Despite their many strengths there are concerns regarding the accuracy and currency of maps, the tendency of drivers to blindly follow the computer's instructions as well as their use by drivers of commercial vehicles. Maintaining accurate and up to date maps is recognised as an important feature of future SatNav systems.

This workshop, held on 17 October, looked at how to cut the 18 months it can take to incorporate changes in the road network as well as to get these changes to the device.

Imagine the scenario where local information on changes to the road-network will be aggregated such that updates to the SatNav and other ITS devices can be made on the same day that changes are made on the ground - downloaded automatically – at a cost that is attractive to the consumer.

The workshop addressed the feasibility of the above vision by looking at:

  • what is required to create a (distributed) database that describes the road network, based upon information provided on a daily basis?
  • how could this information be collated and downloaded into individual SatNav units.
  • how can SatNav users (and society) benefit from daily updates?
  • how can the SatNav Industry benefit from collecting and aggregating map data on a daily basis?
  • the role of regulation versus the market.
