OpenStreetMap
Peter Miller, Ito World Limited (pdf 4MB)

Open Source Mapping is a new fast growing phenomenon. OpenStreetMap is currently the unchallenged leader in this space and has assembled some 11,000 volunteer surveyors from around the world who have captured some 500,000 roads and footpaths in about 2 years. Peter will talk about how the project started, how it works, the sort of data that is being collecting and why they are bothering. He will also cover licensing issues (yes, there are thorny licensing issues even in the ‘free’ mapping space!) and other challenges for the project. Finally he will suggest what lessons commercial mapping providers can learn from this project when nurturing their own armies of volunteers.
