Poor document management costing UK business millions of pounds a year

Paper from Intellect highlights key issue facing organisations today

Technology trade association Intellect today announced the release of “Document management concerns the whole board – a guide for all directors”. Published by Intellect’s document management working group, and launched with the support of Open Text Corporation and Xerox Global Services, the paper highlights the root cause of a range of serious issues facing organisations – poor document management.

’Document Management Concerns the Whole Board’ deals with the strategic business reasons of why managing information is so important, and combines the knowledge and experience of leading industry experts. It shows how to understand the business issues associated with what it newly describes as ‘Information Management Deficiency Syndrome’, how to spot the symptoms in your own organisation and how to strategically address these for the good of the organisation. It is aimed at all board-level professionals, particularly those in non-ICT roles.

The amount of information created and held by organisations, regardless of sector, market or size, has grown at an ever-increasing rate over the last five years. Managing this information has become increasingly important for organisations, in order to keep costs down, improve performance and manage and reduce risk. The growth of this information is expected to increase rapidly into the future, making it imperative that organisations have good document management practices.

Giles Hill, chair of Intellect’s Document Management Group, commented, “This is an important piece of work. For the first time, there is clear advice and guidance, written from the business perspective that shows how to think about the problems of managing documents and information. From discussions with customers and other Intellect members it was clear that this was necessary, and Intellect will continue to work with its members to ensure that the messages in the guidance are heard and understood.”
