Intellect, the trade association for the UK technology industry, today announces that it will host a manufacturing summit on the 15 January to champion the production of energy efficient consumer electronic products. The meeting will be attended by Joan Ruddock, Minister for Sustainable Consumption and Production and the Consumer Electronics Council, which will be represented by a number of leading global manufacturers.
The summit follows discussions between the government, retailers, the British Retail Consortium and energy suppliers regarding efforts to drive increased energy efficiency of consumer electronics devices.
Laurence Harrison, director of consumer electronics at Intellect, comments: "The consumer electronics industry has been consistently improving the energy efficiency or its products. For example, between 1995 and 2006 TV manufacturers have reduced energy consumption of the standby function by 94 per cent. The success we’ve achieved so far with voluntary market–orientated agreements show that an approach to energy efficiency that fosters competition and innovation does work. We hope that the summit in January will build on this success."
Douglas Johnson, senior director of technology policy and international affairs for the Consumer Electronics Association of America, adds: "We've been working alongside Intellect to provide government and other stakeholders with better information about the energy use of consumer electronics, including the important role that technology products and services play in energy conservation and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
"Manufacturers and the consumer electronics industry have made considerable environmental strides with their commitment to voluntary agreements, which already have saved billions of kilowatt hours of electricity and reduced carbon emissions by millions of tons. We believe it's important to recognise that the objective is energy efficiency and conservation, not the creation of new regulations which could harm consumer choice and innovation."
The summit will take place at Intellect's offices in London.
