VEGA supports award-winning Government biometrics programme

Released by VEGA Group PLC on 08/02/2008

8 February 2008 – A ground-breaking programme from UKvisas. supported by VEGA Group PLC (VEGA), to biometrically enrol all visa applicants to the United Kingdom, has won an e-Government award for ‘innovation in strategy’.

UKvisas is a joint directorate of the Border and Immigration Agency and Foreign & Commonwealth Office. Its programme represents the first fully operational biometric capability to be deployed as part of the Government’s identity management strategy, and involved implementing a global biometric visa regime.

VEGA’s task included assuring the integrity of the solution, which is of paramount importance, given the compelling requirement to protect the data of applicants. Additionally, VEGA consultants conducted spot audits in several countries to check whether new procedures were being adhered to.

The system roll out was completed in December 2007, 3 months ahead of schedule, and is currently processing 2.5m applications annually.

UKvisas Programme Manager, Geoff Lockwood, said: “Security specialists from VEGA were an integral part of the UKvisas team involved in the design and implementation of this programme. I would like to thank VEGA for their contribution which was instrumental in ensuring that the programme met its key objectives.”
