After qualifying as a mechanical engineer, Alvin transferred to the Law, qualifying as a Solicitor in 1973 and joining GEC Telecommunications Limited as its Legal Advisor in 1978.

He has remained in the telecommunications business since then, specialising in intellectual property since the early 1990’s.

Throughout, he has been a member of the Legal and IPR committees of the UK national trade association for the CIT industry, Intellect, and is a past Chairman of the Legal & Contractual Issues Group of EICTA, the European CIT industry trade association.

Since January 2006 Alvin has been General Counsel Intellectual Property for the Marketing Unit North West Europe of Ericsson, concentrating principally on collaborative research and development projects, in particular under Framework Programme 7.
