Intellect heralds the launch of FREESAT and Free HD

Intellect, the UK technology association welcomes today’s launch of Freesat from BBC and ITV and in particular the provision of free HD content for the first time in the UK.

Freesat will be an important part of the digital TV landscape in the UK and will offer consumers even greater choice of service. The additional benefit of free High Definition content will be an extremely attractive USP as demand for HD continues to grow

Intellect member companies in the consumer electronics and satellite sectors have already played a key role in developing the service and will continue to do so.

Laurence Harrison, Digital Communications Director at Intellect said: “The launch of Freesat is an extremely important step in the provision High Definition services to the UK consumer”

John Edwards, Chairman of the Intellect Consumer Electronics Council and Director of Communications at Alba Group said: “Freesat is a hugely exciting service for both consumers and broadcasters. It will provide broadcasters with a new platform to deliver content and consumers with a choice of world class High Definition broadcast services“

Pat Norris from Logica who is Chairman of the Intellect Satellite Committee said: “Unlike the switch-over of conventional terrestrial TV from analogue to digital which takes several years to happen, satellite broadcasting is available to the whole country simultaneously and instantly. “
