The traditional UK defence market is becoming increasingly porous. Many companies now leverage their defence expertise and capabilities into offerings for other markets and vice versa.
Security and resilience is a key target market for many defence companies. Protective and predictive technologies, developed for expeditionary ops and force protection, are back in use for domestic security. Military C4ISTAR systems and skills are also proving valuable to domestic customers who need to meet crisis response and security intelligence challenges.
Due to its scale and threat profile, the major events market (including 2012 Olympics) is a focus for many defence capabilities. The use of defence technologies – including for example Unmanned Aerial Systems and communications networks – is being discussed in both industry and government as an answer to some of the challenges around hosting the event.
UK defence’s use of ICT networks to gain battlefield advantage is increasing its dependence on communications infrastructure. Available bandwidth is a critical concern for defence planners, and customers are displaying a keen interest in industry’s current and future offerings in the satellite and spectrum space.
