Information Sharing

Join Intellect

Many do not consider information sharing a market in the traditional sense. It would be a mistake, however, to underestimate the development of thinking surrounding this topic and its pervasive influence on customer requirements. Ignore it at your peril.

Thanks to recent technological developments, information can now be stored, disseminated and used like never before. This has impacted significantly the way that government and the private sector do business, and can have wide-ranging commercial, political and social consequences.

Smart information sharing facilitates the allocation of knowledge and resources, generating a competitive advantage and improving public services. The newly appointed Power of Information Task Force set up by Tom Watson, Minister for Transformational Government, understands that mashing data already in the public domain can produce impressive results.

There have, however, been incidences of high profile data losses across government, and the resulting assumption is that information sharing is equivalent to bad data handling. New imperatives have been created as a result to ensure that information is handled responsibly. Emphasis has shifted onto security and privacy related issues, particularly when personal data is being shared.

Conversely, the Freedom of Information Act has unlocked government information giving the public legal rights of access.

Information sharing is increasingly sophisticated in the emergency services sector, as new technologies enable more robust communication between the police, fire and ambulance networks. This has helped speed up incident response in disaster recovery scenarios, thus improving overall national security and resilience
