About the committee

With the belief that massive requirements exist for technologies that can locate people or objects within emerging services, NHS, customs and excise, security and defence, the committee works to raise the profile of position and timing solutions to industry and UK Government. Working in close partnership with the UKspace Satellite Navigation Sub-Committee, and other influential UK bodies, Intellect's Position and Timing Committee monitors developments in technology, regulation, policy and market opportunities.

Committee objective

To promote the use and development of position and timing information based technologies, equipment, applications and services across a broad range of market segments including land, sea and air.

Committee activities

  • Monitor and influence the UK Government and the European Union legislation that affects these market sectors.
  • Facilitate networking between government, regulators, customers, technology developers and system implementers.
  • Facilitate the contracting for, and implementation of, innovative technologies and concepts.
  • Coordinate lobbying activities with other bodies such as UKspace
  • Influence various funding bodies to optimise both the scope and the available funding

Relationships with other organisations

The committee shall communicate and liaise with other parties including following:

  • Policy makers (eg European, national and local government).
  • Regulators (including financial, business and technical e.g. Ofcom).
  • Standardisation bodies.

  • Technology, applications and equipment developers/manufacturers.
  • Infrastructure providers.
  • Content providers (e.g. cartographic data).
  • Network operators (e.g. cellular and satnav operators).
  • Service providers.
  • End users and their representative bodies.
  • UKspace.

Technologies

It is expected that the following non-exhaustive list of technologies may be used to provide positioning and timing information:

  • Satellites (e.g. GPS, EGNOS, Pseudolite, Galileo).
  • Terrestrial positioning systems (e.g. cellular, eLORAN, 802.11.
  • Fixed position sensors (e.g. roadside/trackside).
  • On platform sensors (e.g. inertial, dead reckoning, odometer/speedometer, radar).
  • Local positioning systems e.g. UWB time of flight systems, and RFID tags.
