Electronics Manufacturing and Design

Background

Intellect is the only truly national UK trade association representing the full range of the electronics manufacturing and design sector. We transcend regional divides and sub-sectors, and aim to ensure that UK electronics industry has what it truly needs in order to grow and prosper: a truly representative voice to address government and wider society, a forum to come together to tackle issues that affect the entire supply chain, a place for benchmarking performance, and a vehicle for networking across the supply chain.

Achievements

  • Networking events with key OEM decision makers including Steve Davies (Thales Director of Purchasing), Lewis Doyle (Managing Director, Shared Services & CIO, QinetiQ), John Roberts (Head of Product Supply Chain, QinetiQ) and Neil Rogers (Chief Procurement Officer, BT).
  • Code of Practice for EMS Providers agreed and published.
  • Facilitation of ongoing dialogue with UL International around various certification issues.
  • Facilitated close collaboration between the UK EMS and PCB sectors and government in order to secure their long term future.
  • Released a PCB data design guide.
  • Helped obtain accreditation for the IPC 610 qualification.
  • Worked with other electronics trade associations to produce quarterly confidence data for the sector.

Current workstreams

  • shaping the market place: benchmarking performance and customer requirements.
  • raising members’ profile: a whole range of marketing and PR opportunities to raise to help members raise their profile.
  • representation and stakeholder relationships: ensuring the needs of the sector are taken into account in the course of revising key regulations: WEEE, RoHS and REACH in particular.
Future workstreams
  • continuing to obtain government subsidy for training: working to ensure technical training courses (e.g. IPC 610) are nationally accredited and eligible for Government funding.
  • releasing a guide and webinar on the issue of offshoring: in conjunction with the Electronics Knowledge Transfer Network.
  • developing a quality mark for independent component distributors: this will help the sector to tackle the issue of counterfeiting.
  • drafting guidelines for the use of persulphates: these will help companies ensure they are following best practice.
