Satellites and Space Services


Background

Intellect ‘s members include satellite and payload manufactures, satellite operators, satellite ground system designers and providers of space derived applications and services.

Intellect’s work is primarily around the application of satellite telecommunications and navigation technology.  This includes funding for research and development, legislation, regulation and expanding the market.

Intellect is a sponsoring association of UKspace.

Space currently contributes around £7 billion a year to the UK Economy and supports around 70,000 jobs. By 2020, the global market in space systems and satellite –enabled applications is set to increase nearly tenfold.

Current workstreams

  • Space IGT - a 20 year vision and strategy for space sponsored by industry and government
  • The Satellite Committee looks at matters related to Satellite Telecommunications including the provision of Satellite Broadband and Satellite Broadcasting. Matters covered include research and development through the ESA ARTES programme and FP7 to the provision of next generation broadband and high definition television
  • Application of Satellite Navigation technology is covered by the Position and Timing Committee (PATC). PATC looks at market opportunities where the requirement could be solved by satellite navigation
  • The Committees work together with the Intellect Wireless Council especially on spectrum issues
  • Space companies are also encouraged to look at Intellect Market Groups such as Transport Group, Major Events Group, Defence, Security and Resilience Group where there may be requirement that could be met by satellite based services
