What is High Tech: Low Carbon Week?

Monday 09 February - Friday 13 February 2009

What is it?

High Tech : Low Carbon Week (HTLCW) 2009
was a series of small events, technology demonstrations and debates all focused on the theme of “how technology is tackling climate change”.

The timing of HTLCW could not have been more important. The UK government had just increased our carbon emissions reduction targets from 60% to 80% by 2050. We had a newly created Department for Energy and Climate Change, who are wrestling with how we will meet these ambitious targets. Technology has a central role to play, not just in improving the energy efficiency of our devices and networks but also in developing low carbon technologies that decrease the carbon emissions of other sectors.

HTLCW looked at how the technology sector is meeting these challenges. Partners and stakeholders from government, technology companies, other trade bodies and NGO’s contributed and hosted sessions during the week.

What did delegates get?

  • Insight in to how the most innovative technologies will combat climate change
  • Access to the thought leaders in this area including technology companies, government ministers, politicians, NGO’s and commentators
  • An understanding of the major opportunities and challenges facing the technology sector
  • The opportunity to choose from a wide range of topics and issues rather than being forced to listen to them all
  • Attendance at a network of small events that focused on action, innovation and identifying practical steps that can make a difference

Who attended?

  • Companies who develop low carbon technologies
  • Companies from other sectors who are seeking to reduce their energy use
  • Government ministers and civil servants
  • Politicians from other political parties
  • Non-Governmental Organisations and charities
  • Analysts and research companies
  • Academia
  • Media
