High Tech: Low Carbon Week - Intellect's role

Monday 09 February - Friday 13 February 2009

As the organisation representing the UK technology sector we have a big responsibility in taking action to combat climate change. Although climate change is a global phenomenon, the proactive steps our government and other political parties have taken, as well as the innovative and creative technology sector we have in the UK, means that we are well placed to take a leadership role.

Intellect represents over 800 companies ranging from SMEs to multinationals and across a range of technology sectors including consumer electronics, IT, software, telecommunications and electronics manufacturing and design.  As such we are an important partner in the fight against climate change.

In February 2008 we produced the report ‘High Tech : Low Carbon – The role of technology in tackling climate change’ which set out the challenges and opportunities facing us as a sector.  The report also made a number of commitments on behalf of Intellect and its members, and at High Tech: Low Carbon Week we reported on the progress that has been made – one year on.  The report has now been replicated in numerous member states throughout Europe and is recognised as an important piece of thought leadership.

In the report we analysed the four most important areas where technology can improve energy use and it is these areas that provided the structure of High Tech: Low Carbon Week:

  • The energy efficiency of technology devices
  • Enhancing technologies that help us do the same things but with more efficiency
  • Enabling technologies that change the way we do things,  enable new processes and new  ways of working
  • Transforming technologies that allow us to do completely different things
