Supply Chain Working Group

Biography

The Supply Chain Working Group represents a diverse body of organisations and individuals that share an interest in ongoing supply chain issues.  These issues challenge both the private and public sectors in spite of the considerable body of theory about, and best practice for, optimising and managing supply chain.

Current Activities

The group has finished its fact-finding stage. The conclusions from this phase, in particular the examples of good and bad practice that this stage highlighted, have been discussed by the management committee.

As part of a wider exercise of highlighting good practice within supply chain, and the importance of good practice, Intellect is producing an online, interactive supply chain guide. It will explain for each type of participant the behaviours it can expect to come across from other participants at each stage of the procurement cycle. It will also highlight the good practice that supply chain participants can learn from. The Supply Chain Portal will be launched in Autumn 2008.

This will form part of a wider campaign to increase supply chain management professionalism, which will include campaigning for the inclusion of supply chain management as a profession in its own right that should be studied within MBA courses.

Objectives

The Supply Chain Working Group objectives are to:

  • gain a deeper understanding the issues that cause ongoing dissatisfaction for all stakeholders in the supply chain for both the public and private sectors – particularly issues that prevent realisation of high value and low risk
  • examine whether documented best practice is appropriate and sufficient to address the causes of dissatisfaction
  • augment existing best practice where necessary
  • pilot best practice in selected projects and assess their effectiveness
  • promote the implementation of best practice based on proven, successful outcomes
