Returners Good Practice Guides

In a drive to meet the IT skills shortfall, BCS in association with Intellect has produced two exciting publications aimed at increasing the number of IT professionals who plan and manage a successful return to the industry.

Returners and Re-entrants is a booklet aimed at IT employers that contains useful tips and case studies to help organisations attract and assist IT professionals who have taken a career break to get back to the profession.

Taking a Break is a booklet for IT professionals, aimed at helping them plan for and manage their career breaks.

Research and practice show that:

  • professionals who plan for a career break are more likely to make a successful return to work
  • returners and re-entrants, given support and training before, during and after recruitment can become effective technical team members after just six months
  • employers who are proactive in working with returners and their line managers are more likely to keep returners after the so-called six-month ‘crunch’ period
  • flexibility maintains competitive advantage and benefits everyone
