Greener Government Working Group

At a glance: The Government published their Greening Government ICT Strategy in July 2008. In response the Intellect Public Sector Council formed a dedicated working group to focus on the issue and help make today's ambitions for greening government IT a reality. The group is open to all Intellect members.

Biography

Our main areas of focus are:

  • Engaging with government on the greening government ICT strategy
  • Assisting government departments’ action plans on greening government ICT
  • Looking at how industry can promote green ICT in government
  • Promote the overall sustainability agenda in the public sector

Current work areas:

  • Greening Government ICT Workshops: the Workstream is working to host a number of joint industry-government workshops on how departments can achieve their action plans and how the government use ICT to reduce carbon emissions in other government operations. The workstream hosted the introductory workshop on 11 February 2009 which looked at the broader agenda across government
  • Public Sector Case Study Digest: the workstream has produced a public sector case study digest, much like the case study digest that was recently produced by Intellect’s Hi-Tech: Low Carbon report.  This is a publication outlining how the public sector is working to reducing its carbon emissions, achieve sustainability targets and to promote best practice across the public sector.
  • Sustainable Procurement: the workstream is looking into how to best promote a best practice for sustainable procurement in the public sector.  Diverging and inconsistent standards across public sector organisations as well as lack of education of the issue has made the government's goal of sustainable procurement difficult to achieve. This workstream will work with government on addressing these challenges and working towards a sound sustainble procurement policy that is efficient for all sides and delivers on targets.
