John Higgins, director general at Intellect, the UK technology trade body, said: “Next Generation Broadband means jobs, economic growth and innovation in the UK. A recent LSE study suggested up to 280,500 jobs could be created or retained by next generation broadband networks. The £6 a year levy shrinks in comparison to the hundreds of millions of tax payers’ money that other countries are finding for their networks. Along with encouraging private sector investment, this is a potentially elegant solution in straitened times. The report also commits to a Digital Switchover of Public Services once current broadband reaches the whole population. Making the internet the first port of call for government services could reduce the costs of government administration, while making services more flexible and accessible. This report has moved the whole debate on Digital Britain forward, not just on broadband but on digital radio and intellectual property too. Nothing is ever perfect, but anyone who wants to knock this in the future should put something better on the table first.” Download Digital Britain report (PDF 3MB)
