Commenting on the government’s plans to reform adult social care, Melissa Frewin, Head of Healthcare at Intellect, the trade association for the technology industry, said:
“Social care needs to change. The government is right to address the funding pressures, demographic change and rising expectations that are rendering the current system unsustainable. A National Care Service, which offers national assessment, joined-up services, information and advice, personalised care and support and fair funding will only be successful if the technology is in place to underpin it.
“Joining up health and social care will help us to support the needs of individuals in new ways while making care delivery more efficient and effective. The formation of a ministerial integration group is welcome news but all parties, including the technology industry, need to be engaged to ensure that the technical, commercial and cultural barriers to joining-up services are removed.
Intellect has launched Fitting IT all together: An Intellect position paper on health and social care (PDF 851KB) that calls for more openness and transparency around the strategy for integrated health and social care, a roadmap to support joint working and earlier engagement with industry.
