Intellect welcomes Pre-Budget Report’s spectrum statement

However, the trade body urges Government to take precautions for digital switchover

Intellect, the trade association for the UK hi-tech industry, has today welcomed  the statement made in the pre-Budget Report, reaffirming Government's policy that future use of the broadcast spectrum should be determined by a detailed programme of work by Ofcom. Intellect recognises that this is intended to improve spectrum efficiency, but it urges the Government to ensure this does not compromise the move to digital switchover.

Commenting, Stephen Hearnden, Director of Telecommunications and Technology at Intellect said:

“Intellect applauds the Government’s desire to work alongside Ofcom to maximise the use of prime spectrum . However, a clumsy approach  could result in disturbances to emerging new Broadcast services such as SDTV and HDTV. If the Government does not tread carefully, we could find ourselves in a situation where Broadcasting services could be interfered with by other services using a neighbouring frequency, causing disturbances to the viewer.”

“We urge the government and Ofcom to work closely with Intellect and others in the Industry to ensure that the approach is as considered and coordinated as possible.”
