07/10/05 ICT should be at the heart of policy development, says hi-tech industry Hi-tech industry comments as DTI launches ONS / LSE report into technologies effect on Productivity
Intellect, the trade association for the UK hi-tech industry, has today welcomed the findings of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) ICT and Productivity report series which found that ICT has an important role to play in helping to boost productivity.
John Higgins, Director General of Intellect, commented: "The DTI reports prove what we have been saying for many years, that investment in and effective use of ICT increases productivity. The findings are consistent with recent statistics from the European Commission, showing that the ICT sector drives 40 percent of Europe's productivity growth and 25 percent of EU GDP growth. This is proof that countries that adopt, adapt and absorb the benefits of ICT, services and applications achieve significant benefits in terms of productivity, innovation, growth and quality of life. Vitally though, the reports have found that countries that invest heavily in ICT gain significant competitive advantage over countries that don't."
"What’s important now is that we do not loose the momentum. We have the evidence proving ICTs impact, now let’s be quick in taking decisive action. Industry calls on Government to do three things. Firstly to put ICT at the heart of policy development. Secondly to begin to include a set of measures to ascertain UK’s progress in implementation, take up and successful exploitation of ICT within the DTI’s National Productivity Dashboard. And thirdly to fully engage in the i2010 programme."
"We should not underestimate the up hill struggle the UK faces as it attempts to catch up with its global competitors such as the USA and China, and the sooner we take action to realise the full potential of ICT the better."
