“New WEEE deadline is realistic”, says Intellect UK hi-tech industry responds to the DTI’s announcement of new implementation date for WEEE
Intellect, the trade association for the UK hi-tech industry, has today welcomed the DTI’s announcement that collection and recycling of waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) will be the responsibility of manufacturers from June 2006.
Speaking following the announcement John Higgins, Intellect’s Director General said; “ The WEEE Directive poses major practical challenges. We therefore welcome the DTI’s decision to postpone the implementation date for the WEEE Directive until June 2006, as we’d prefer to delay implementation and get it right than be faced with a situation which is unworkable.”
“As we now move to implementation of the WEEE Regulation we consider it even more vital that the Environment Agency and Government Departments pay attention to Industry’s calls for National Clearing House scheme. Manufacturers of WEEE products consider a National Clearing House Scheme to be the only viable option. It will enable them to effectively spread the financial load, thereby limiting the ultimate cost felt by the consumer.”
