Industry Challenges Government to Demonstrate Commitment to Hi-Tech UK DfPEI ministerial appointments and responsibilities are confirmed
Intellect has today challenged the Government to provide a clear indication that technology issues have not been side-lined in the creation of the new Department for Productivity, Energy and Industry (DfPEI).
Intellect considers that whilst some individual technology issues are addressed within the various portfolios of the new ministers, the major failing remains that there is no clear ministerial leadership. This means that there is a real risk that the big picture will be lost and that key initiatives, such as the Digital Strategy, will fall into the cracks between departments.
Commenting, Tom Wills-Sandford, Director of Public Affairs at Intellect said "Technology impacts every aspect of our society and our economy. Our ability to exploit and absorb the potential of technology will determine whether we succeed or fail in a global knowledge economy. The Government claims to understand the enabling role of technology and to be committed to the knowledge economy. We challenge it to prove this commitment by demonstrating that technology has not been side-lined in this new DfPEI."
"As the MP with the closet remit, we now look to Alun Michael to prioritise the technology industry and the UK's exploitation of technology within his portfolio, and to Number 10 to provide some proof that it will remain committed to enabling the UK to become a leading Knowledge Economy. In the course of the next parliament, this will mean successful implementation of; the No. 10 / DTI Digital Strategy announced just before the election, implementation of IT projects in the Public Sector, particularly ID cards and Connecting for Health (previously known as NPfIT) in the NHS and Digital TV switchover.
