Intellect urges Chancellor to improve tax inspectors' training

The hi-tech industry comments on what it expects from the Budget report

Intellect today urges the Chancellor, Gordon Brown to deliver a 2006 Budget which includes plans to ensure that tax inspectors understand Software R&D, as promised in his pre Budget report.

Intellect and its hi-tech members called on the Chancellor to ensure that tax inspectors have sufficient knowledge to deal with all claims, particularly those from SMEs. There is evidence that software R&D projects have been hampered by tax inspectors who lack expertise in the software industry. The Chancellor took this onboard in his pre Budget report and Intellect is now hoping to see a clearer outline of the proposed programme with a timetable.

Commenting, Tom Wills-Sandford, Deputy Director General at Intellect said:

"We know the Treasury is taking R&D seriously and we welcome this. The Chancellor’s announcement in the pre Budget report that tax inspectors would receive appropriate training was certainly a stepping stone for the industry. We urge the Chancellor to fulfil his promise and to give a clearer understanding of how such a programme will be implemented and to make sure it is prioritised. The Treasury must maintain its pace of reform."
