Consumer Electronics Industry is ready to support Switchover, says Intellect
UK hi-tech industry comments as Government confirms DTV switchover plans will go ahead

Intellect has welcomed this evening's announcement by the Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, as it confirmed Government's plan to switch off analogue TV signals between 2008 and 2012. The trade body, which represents UK consumer electronics firms, has long been calling for greater clarity from Government over its digital switchover plans. With this announcement comes the certainty all stakeholders need in order to plan effectively, and ultimately ensure that the project has the supply chain support it needs in order to succeed.

Commenting on the announcement, John Higgins, Director General of Intellect said; "We are extremely pleased that Government has finally confirmed their intention to switch to digital in the UK. This announcement means that we can now get down to the business of supporting UK consumers as they move to digital through to 2012."

Intellect will also continue to support Digital UK's consumer communications campaign, which will seek to outline what switchover will mean, when it will happen and how consumers should prepare. The digital tick logo, which identifies the consumer electronics products that will operate post switchover, will be at the centre of these communications. Intellect members are committed to the digital tick logo, and 22 consumer electronics firms now carry the logo on their products.

Higgins continued, "The digital tick logo is central to the success of digital switchover and it is vital that people are looking for the logo and consulting their retailer when they are making purchases. Industry has invested heavily to ensure that there is a wide range of digital products available to consumers and the logo will enable consumers to identify the full choice of product that is available."

Intellect also welcomed the Government's commitment to support vulnerable groups through switchover and will be working with the DCMS and Digital UK during the Bolton trial to help establish exactly what the support requirements will be.
