Defence Industrial Strategy positive and intelligent step, says Intellect

Hi-tech industry comments as UK MoD Defence Industrial Strategy is announced

Intellect, the trade association for the UK hi-tech industry, has welcomed today’s announcement by Dr. John Reid, Secretary of State for Defence relating to the publication of an industrial strategy for the Defence sector.

Commenting following the Secretary of State’s statement Dr. Graham Attrill, Defence Director at Intellect said;

“For military capability to be delivered in a more coherent and efficient manner it is vital that industry and the MoD have a complete understanding of future defence capability requirements, the principles that will underpin future procurements, and how to plug any future gaps in industry’s capacity and capability to deliver.

The UK hi-tech industry therefore considers the publication of the Defence Industrial Strategy to be a positive and intelligent development.  We applaud the open and constructive approach which has so far been adopted by the MoD in its development of the DIS, as we believe that early supplier engagement is fundamental to the success of all government modernisation projects.

We must now ensure that the momentum is maintained, and that focus immediately shifts to implementation of the Strategy.  Industry is committed to this process and to continuing to work closely with the MoD in order to assess and understand the full implications of DIS implementation across the entire supply chain.  We consider this understanding to be vital to the successful implementation of the Strategy, as integrated end-to-end solutions are increasingly becoming central to capability delivery.

Over the coming months we invite all members of industry who are interested or express concern about the implications of DIS to engage with us in robust discussion.”
