Delay to WEEE the right approach, says Intellect Hi-tech industry prefers to delay the implementation of the Directive, rather than be faced with legislation which is unworkable Intellect, the trade association for the UK hi-tech industry, has today welcomed the DTI’s announcement that implementation of the Directive relating to recycling of waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) will be delayed until a fourth consultation exercise has been undertaken.
Commenting following the announcement John Higgins, Intellect’s Director General said;
“Whilst the UK hi-tech industry is supportive of all measures designed to protect the environment, we are also committed to ensuring that the legislation which emerges from the consultation process is both equitable and workable for all producers of electric and electronic equipment.
We therefore welcome the announcement that implementation of the WEEE directive will be delayed until a fourth consultation process has been undertaken, as we’d prefer to delay implementation and get it right than be faced with a situation which is unworkable.
As we enter the fourth consultation period we consider it even more vital that the Environment Agency and Government Departments pay attention to Industry’s calls for a National Clearing House scheme. Manufacturers of WEEE products consider a National Clearing House Scheme to be the only viable option. It will enable them to effectively spread the financial load, thereby limiting the ultimate cost felt by the consumer.”
